This thesis is written to analyze a critic, Imwha`s discourse on literary media. The previous researches on Imwha are mainly focused on his poetry and criticism of novel, and his study on the history of literature. But, to understand the whole features of his various writings, it is necessary to research his cultural discourse and essays. Therefore, the research of Imwha`s discourse on literary media is very significant. Imwha showed intensive interest and introspection on literary media such as newspaper and magazines between the late 1930s and the early 1940s. He tried to restore critical interpretation through the writings such <Argument on Journal Culture> and <Argument on cultural business>. He noticed that the literary magazines of those days lost political and social roles. And he also tried the critical introspection on the role of literary media to retrieve the political role. Imwha showed keen recognition of the role of journalism in the literary field of those days. Therefore, it can be said that Imwha was the pioneer, who understood the authority property of the literary media correctly. Imwha`s study of literary media and cultural industry means a lot to this age.

This paper is an attempt to study on Choi Inhoon(a novelist, 崔仁勳: 1936~)`s Hwadoo(話頭) that is a masterpiece of his latter years. In this work, descriptions about literature of the Colonial Period are found frequently. Through this narrative, Choi Inhoon reveals a special affection for writers in the Colonial Era. He considers his own writings as an inheritance of their literature. In the process of thinking about literature in the Colonial Era, Choi Inhoon dug into the concept ``exile``. In this context, he noted the existences of writers in exile, such as Jo Myeonghee(趙明熙), Kim Taejun(金台俊), Kims Saryang(金史良). From the viewpoint of Choi Inhoon, literature of exile is the most significant form of writing colonial writers can choose. At the same time, he noted the writers, such as Lee Taejun(李泰俊), Park Taewon(朴泰遠), Lim Hwa(林和) who could not able to choose exile. They showed critical mind about colonial community in their own way. Hwadoo(話頭) is a work corresponding to ``the late style``, which was introduced by Adorno and deepened by Edward Said. The late style represents adhering to uncompromising stand about art in their later years. It is a far cry from the artistic compromise and stability. This late style is the form flowing through Hwadoo(話頭). This work is closer to the free essay and autobiography free from classic norms of novels and the organic composition. Through the researching about literature of Choi Inhoon, the symbol of exile and late style, modern Korean novels will be able to show meaningful renewal.

This paper is a study on the relationship between Im-hwa(林和) and Kim-namcheon(金南天), the two Korean representative critics in the Japanese colonial period. They are the leading critics who made the most important achievement in that period. It is very interesting that they forged critical friendship in the various ways such as criticism, solidarity, partnership, and admiration. They were the critics who had the most influences and played the leading roles in KAPF. They worked together as comrades in the criticism field until their deaths in 1953. Viewed from the perspective of Im-wha, Kim-namcheon was both the junior and comrade who needed constant criticism. Therefore, Im-wha sometimes scathingly criticized Kim-namcheon. On the contrary to this, Kim-namcheon considered Im-wha as a respectful senior and great mentor. Both Im-wha and Kim-namcheon criticised the system and structure of the literary circles more than any other critics. This means that they were the critics who had the spirit of the thorough critical mind. At the same time, they both kept the exquisite stances between cooperation and resistance in the wild storms of the Japanese militarism. Sometimes they left the traces which can be considered as cooperation with Japan. At the same time, they left some writings which can be interpreted as passive resistance. Walking a tightrope between cooperation and resistance was the fate which these two critics couldn`t avoid. But, unfortunately, it seemed that their relationship didn`t develop into the existential conversation and deep friendship.

The study has found that Lim Wha had particular self-consciousness on essay. Lim Wha suggested classical and romantic reading against the sudden flood of books at that time. Also, he traveled in many places including Tokyo, Masan, Pyongyang, Buyeo, and took walks around Naksan, Dongdaemun, Changsin-dong in Seoul. And he also excursed to short-distance spots such as Wangsimri, Tukseom, Chungryangri, and Jungreung. Furthermore, Lim Wha captured the fascinating scenery of a modern city, KyungSung(Seoul) with the eyes of a stroller. He revealed his both-sides swaying between modernity and premodern nature. Lim Wha`s lonely sentiments can be seen properly through the study on his essays. So studies on his essays can be a valuable steppingstone for writing a critical biography of Lim Wha.

Recent studies on Modern Literature have moved onto Interdisciplinary study which is combined with other various fields of study. With reference to this tendency of study, this thesis tries an Interdisciplinary study between literature and psychologic medicine. This thesis focuses on a female writer, Kwon, Do-ok, who killed herself at the age of forty in 1998. Kwon, Do-ok dealt with problems such as mental diseases and impulse of suicide in her only novel. This means that she tried to objectify and stare at her own mental diseases through writing her novels. Throughout the history of Korean Modern Novels, there aren`t any other novels that concentrate upon mental problems more than her novels. Kwon, Do-ok showed various processes and methods of medical treatments for mental diseases including conversations with other patients and interviews with psychiatrists in her novels. Especially since she started to have her mental breakdown, her novels focused much more on mental diseases and the impulse of suicide. In spite of these struggles, she eventually killed herself in 1998. Her suicide will be remembered as an example that the trials to overcome the mental disease by creative activities like writing a novel finally failed. However, because of her suicide itself, Kwon, Do-ok`s novels can be read as precious clinicaldata for the study of the relations between literature and mental disease or mental problems.

This paper treats an outcome and limits of Baridaegi that is a new work of a novelist, Hwang Seokyoung. Baridaegi expresses harmony and solidarity of mankind through the difficult life of Bari who escaped from North Korea(脫北). The narrative structure of this novel is exactly alike the framework of <princess Bari story> that has a kind of traditional narrative. Through creative transformation of the traditional narrative, Hwang Seokyoung presents Baridaegi as a new model of East Asian`s narrative mode. The first half of this novel shows extreme pain and despair of the people who escape from North Korea, describing vividly the process of escape from North Korea of Bari`s family. After her escape from North Korea, a heroine Bari went to England via China by ship. In England, Bari reveals her extraordinary talent that lets her be able to grasp other`s previous life. This story also borrows the framework of <princess Bari story>. But whether this adaptation is indeed successful or not needs a hardheaded examination. Excessive appearance of fantasy and coincidence is a weak point of this novel. This is the degradation of realism narrative. Hwang Seokyoung`s Baridaegi exists between the creative renewal of narrative and the degradation of realism. Through critical conversation with Baridaegi, Korean novels of these times will show a new horizon.
