Vol.11 No.-
The study of Tennessee Williams in Korea has been made a better showing for about thirty years after 1955. We can find out seventy reviews, fifty-four productions, translations of of seven long-length plays and four one-act plays of Tennessee Williams. Especially, A Streetcar Named Desire was a favorite drama to our readers and audiences. There were many productions, after performing by Singuˇghyoˇpuˇihoe in 1955. I suppose that A Streetcar Named Desire has a great influence on Korean culture and society. Above all, Kkoch'ip'uˇl Moˇgo Sannuˇn Kigwanch'a (1956) and Yokmang(1963) were leaned upon it in many ways. The purpose of this paper is (1) to compare A Streetcar Named Desire with Kkoch'ip'uˇl Moˇgo Sannuˇn Kigwaneh'a and Yokmang. (2) to discover the cultural similarities and difference and (3) to make clear the reasons of their reception of Tennessee Williams and rejection setting in their plays because of the negative major cognitive elements. The mian focus is concerned on the ways to live in the social upheaval.

The Study of Tennessee Williams` dramas in Korea have been limited to close looks at the characters involved without regard for the whole effect of the drama. The approach to drama has to take into account the whole effect including acting, directing, sound, lighting, scenery, costumes, properties, and theatre space. This study deals with three aspects of symbolism in Suddenly Last Summer: Literary Symbol, Symbolic Action, and Symbolic Stagecraft. The aims of the study are (1) to analyze the symbols in relation to the subject and (2) to research the characteristic of symbolic technique in this drama. Especially in Chapter F, "Symbolic Stagecraft", symbolism that Tennessee Williams used to emphasize both meaning and mood was used to analyze the whole effect in parts, scenery, costumes, lighting, properties, and sound. After searching each symbol completely, putting all symbols together, I discovered following theme of Suddenly Last Summer. The theme is to tell of Sebastian`s gruesome death that Catherine (Main character) saw with her own under the attack of very cold antagonists (Sister Felicity, Mrs. Holly, George, Doctor Cu-kro-wicz, and Mrs. Venable). Although Catharine is threatened by them, she tells the truth refusing to act against her will. On top of all this she is confronted with a great deal of crisis.
Vol.12 No.1

The Night of the Iguana :
Vol.4 No.1
The Study of Tennessee Williams` dramas in Korea have been limited to close looks at the characters involved without regard for the whole effect of the drama. The drama. The approach to drama has to take into account the whole effect including acting, directing, sound, lighting, scenery, costumes, properties, and theatre space. This study deals with three aspects of symbolism in The Night of the Iguana: Literary Symbol, Symbolic Action, and Symbolic Stagecraft. The aims of the study are (1) to analyze the symbols in relation to the subject and (2) to research the characteristic of symbolic technique in this drama. Especially in Chapter IV, "Symbolic Stagecraft" symbolism that Tennessee Williams used to emphasize both meaning and mood was used to analyze the whole effect in parts, scenery, costumes, lighting, properties, and sound. After searching each symbol completely, putting all symbols together, I discovered following theme of The Night of the Igunna. The main character is Hannah Jelkes who is quite penniless. She is then indefatigable in her endeavors to live with her grandfather (Nonno), and befriends a few characters in distress with deep love. In conclusion, an aspect of symbolism and the characteristic of the symbolic techique in The Night of the Iguana are as follows: 1. The French Symbolists praised "death" but in this drama it means an eternal life-force. 2. Though early Symbolists dramas are artificial and stylized, Tennessee Williams` dramas give a living inner description of a state of psychology (Hannah, Reverend, Shannon). 3. Hannah and her grandfather never escape from the reality. 4. Characters have a sense of humor. 5. This drama is poor in lierary symbols in comparison with A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagrie and Suddenly Last Summer.
