This paper is written on the purpose of replying to the criticism raised by Prof. Young Hoon Rhee (“The Historical Time-Space in Confusion and Fantasy – The Reply to Huh’s Criticism to Me-“). According to his assertion, the agricultural productivity of Korea declined drastically during 18th and 19th century, but shows an upward trend with the entering of Japanese farmer to Korea. When I clearly proved there’s no irrigation facilities created by Japanese farmer until 1917 with empirical evidence, he changed his map from 1917 to 1921 without any explanation. There was not a shred of evidence to support his assertion. His regression analysis on the productivity of rice farming between 1645 and 1945 also ignored the particularities of the source data. His assertion that the rapid increase of agricultural product between 1910-1917 was caused by the boom of WWI also could never be proved. His explanations were nothing to do with the theme. I think that the Prof. Rhee’s assertions comes from his imagination, and there is nothing virtual about it.

In modern Japan, two different images about Dalian are co-existing: a modern city and a colonial city. Those images of Dalian represent an aspect of Dalian as a colonial seaport town built in the 20th century. Dalian has been under the domination of Great powers including England, Russia and Japan, one after another, and in the process, it became a representative colonial seaport town in East Asia where different ethnic groups co-existed. Firstly, I will look at Dalian’s modern history. This can be said to be the history of ordeal in a sense that the city of Dalian has passed through the contacts and conflicts with different ethnic groups. And secondly, I will look at a possibility of a new identity which was born in the midst of the history. Multi-cultural society of Dalian was another feature of colonial city of Dalian resulting from the history of Imperialism. Diaspora people or marginal men, who were created in the midst of political chaos, were definitely the tragic existence as well as the victim of history. At the same time, they relativized the logic of a nation-state that regards the equation of the ethnic origin with political identity as natural. In this sense, Dalian, a colonial seaport city built in 20th century, has a significance as a method to imagine the post-modern times.
