The aim of this research is to find out how wives who experienced their husbands' extramarital sexual relations continue their marriage lives in order to understand and structuralize the wives' response and adaptation process more deeply. To achieve the aim of the study, grounded theory, presented by Straus and Corbin(1988), among many other qualitative research methods, was applied and used. Participants of this research are the wives between the ages of 35 and 55 who experienced their husbands' extramarital relations, and whose experiences were recorded and analysed by in-depth interviews. Data analysis formed the conditional matrix through open, axial, or selective codings following the procedures of grounded theory. The research results are as follows. In the case of open coding, properties and dimensions of categories are continuously developed to derive 97 concepts, 34 subcategories, and 15 categories. In the case of axial coding, category analysis and processing are done by paradigms. Through this analysis, the causal condition turned out to be 'rash marriage' and 'sexual relations', and the central phenomenon is 'the sense of falling off the cliff'. Contextual condition is 'the husband's attitude', and 'the position of husbands toward divorce', and intervention condition is derived as 'support system', 'emotion of marriage life', and 'recognition of extramarital affairs'. The tactics of action/interaction are derived as 'confirmation', ‘physical, emotional separation', 'preparation for realistic response', practical use of response resources', and 'new choice'. From these phases, there derived the adaptation process, which has the periods of confirmation, separation, settlement, and self-examination. During the confirmation period, they continuously tried to verify and reveal the fact that their husbands had not finished their extramarital relations. During the separation, they verified that their husbands' extramarital relations had not finished in order to try physical and emotional separation with their husbands and to give up their roles of mothers-and daughters-in-law. During the settlement, they separated from their husbands, but built up new roles as mothers. They prepared new plans to live through the current situation, and adapted themselves marriage life, taking advantage of realistic responses. Lastly, the self-examination phase was that of new choice, in which they decided how to live, thinking over their marriage lives as a woman and a mother in order to plan their own new lives. The intervention condition shortens a period of the phases or gives influence to change the phases. The core category was found in the selective coding and the conditional matrix was set up with it. It is a contracted word, which represents the central theme of this research. The adapting process of the wives who experienced their husbands' extramarital relations has the characteristic that 'they experienced gaseumaepi and tolerated the reality at last. 'Gaseumaepi' is a pure Korean word, meaning a symptom in which the heart feels heavy and the stomach is upsetting, which explains the emotion when they could not express their sadness and endure it while appeasing their anger. Tolerance means that they cover up or accept the unpleasant situation for their future relations. The process of tolerance described their personal efforts in forgiving their husbands and using the situation to make their future relations better. Tolerance has another meaning, to forget and ignore the continuity of their husbands' extramarital relations, because they don't think it influences their lives any more. In other words, they separate their husbands from their lives and admit that they are just the fathers of their children, but not their husbands any more, which shows a strong sense of resignation. Therefore, they tried to get out of their emotional distress, and seemed to play a new role of independent and subjective 'I'. Consequently, the situation in which they experienced 'gaseumaepi' and tolerated the reality can be explained like this: while they experienced emotional and physical pains because of their husbands' extramarital relations, they felt extreme sadness, enough to give them heartbreak, and began to adapt to the situation with time. It has been done through two processes, the tolerance of acceptance or an unsolved problem. The types of the wives' adaption were analysed through the standardizing process between categories in the phase of the selective coding. Adapting types were derived with adaptiveness and sensitivity. adaptiveness can be named as the responding ability to the change of patterns between husbands and wives, and sensitivity was established following the degree of affection and interest to their husbands after their extramarital relations. Based on the results, their types were analysed as follows; the type of separation and freedom; the type of connection and acceptance; the type of stiffness and resignation; the type of confusion and attachment. Adaptiveness was named as separation, connection, stiffness, and confusion, while sensitivity was freedom, acceptance, resignation, and attachment. Lastly, in the phase of conditional matrix, how these influence their phases according to the levels of a person, family, and society was presented in the form of a matrix. Based on the results found from the study, the conclusion part of this dissertation includes the practical methods, which can be used in the scenes of consultation and medical therapy, and adds some suggestions which should be done through later research.
