When one examines the present situation of the Korean Church, he will come to know that the Korean Church is in a process of development in two aspects. The first aspect is the so-called movement of "open worship" that is happening in local churches. The second is the movement of the restoration of worship that is being held in the field of practical theology. Open worship is somewhat criticized for its absence of liturgical theology, and is rather compared to a revival meeting. On the other hand, the movement of the restoration of worship that might be called a Liturgical Movement gives us the impression that the worship of the Church is going back to the Roman Catholic Mass of the period of the 10th-15th centuries. It seems that the two movements are moving in opposite directions. One is moving toward non-liturgical worship and the other is moving toward liturgical ceremony. How can they be balanced and harmonized? One might find the answer by taking a good model which can lead us in the right direction. That is to compare the present Korean worship situation with the reformers' worship in the 16th century which led to the Protestant tradition. The reformers tried to be biblical and then sought to restore the worship of the early Church. It is notable that they have given us a Protestant legacy by their blood-shedding struggle. Therefore, the reformers' criticisms of the Roman Catholic Mass and their reformation of it will be researched in order to achieve the two purposes of this thesis. The first purpose is to differentiate the reformers' evangelical worship from the Mass of the Roman Catholic Church by comparing them with each other. The second is to display what kind of worship we have to keep by examining the process of the reformers' reformation of the Mass and the characteristics of their reformed worship. Since this thesis is focused on the restoration of the Mass by the reformers, the history of worship after the Reformation will not be dealt with. The structure of this thesis is as follows. Chapter Ⅰ : As introduction, the problems, purpose and methods of this research will be dealt with. Chapter Ⅱ : It will be argued that the Reformation was started mainly from discontent with the Mass of the Roman Catholic Church, so that the Reformers had to reform the Mass in the beginning of the Reformation. Then the theological reasons why the Reformation was carried out and its main ideas will be investigated. Chapter Ⅲ : Each Reformer's criticisms of the Mass and ideas for its reformation will be probed. Starting from Luther and Zwingli, and ending with Calvin, their criticisms of the Mass and the characteristics of its reformation will be researched. Chapter Ⅳ : By comparing each Reformer's restoration of worship, the similarities and differences of their reformation of the Mass will be displayed. Then the impacts of their reformation of the Mass on Protestant worship will be historically studied. Chapter Ⅴ : Conclusion. A summary with the writer's personal suggestions for the future of worship is added. It should be remembered that we have been set free from the heavy chain of the Mass of the Roman Catholic Church due to the blood-shedding effort of the Reformers. We should be grateful for the blessings of Protestant worship, by which we come to God directly by reading the Bible and singing hymns in the presence of the Holy Spirit. In closing, we have to follow the way of the Reformers for the holy war of evangelism in order to save millions of souls in this world who are still moaning with pain under a heavy chain of Roman Catholicism's "mediation of priest" and "the Mass".
