신중현의 음악에서 나타나는 사이키델릭 록의 특징에 관한 연구

대중음악은 천한 것으로 여겨져 학술적인 가치를 인정받지 못하였고 이와 관련한 연구는 상당히 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 지금의 음악교육은 전통음악을 제외하고 나면, 역사, 이론, 실연에 관한 모든 분야가 외국의 사례를 통해야만 하는 상황이다. 그동안 연주 생활을 하면서 현재 우리가 하고 있는 음악의 뿌리는 어떻게 형성 되었는가에 관한 궁금증을 늘 가지고 있었다. 다소 늦은 감이 있지만 비로소 이 분야에 관한 연구의 필요성을 절감했다. 우선 비교적 가까운 역사인 미 8군으로 부터 시작된 밴드 음악에 초점을 맞추고, 그 중심에서 가장 큰 활약을 했던 신중현의 사이키델릭 음악을 시작점으로 하였다. 비록 일부분에 한정되어 있지만 본 연구는 우리 대중음악 역사의 한 장면을 되짚어보고 이에 관한 자료들을 남겨서 후배들에게 조금이나마 알리는데 그 목적이 있다. 본론의 제 1 장 히피, 사이키델릭, LSD에 관해서는 미국의 문화사, 사회사에 관한 자료들과 록 음악에 관해 다룬 자료 및 단국대학교 대학원 신수남의 석사논문‘록의 한국 수용과 신중현의 재창조 과정’을 참고하였다. 제 2 장의 신중현에 관해서는 그의 저서 두 권 및 인터뷰 자료를 참고하였다. 제 3 장의 곡 분석은 신중현의 음악 활동 기간 중 사이키델릭 록의 성격이 강하게 나타나는 시기에 만들어진 열 두 곡을 선택하여 가사, 편곡, 사운드에 중점을 두고 분석했다. 악보는 복각되어 나온 음반 자료를 토대로 직접 채보하여 수록했다. 신중현은 1955년 미8군 쇼에서 기타리스트로 데뷔했다. 신중현의 기타 연주는 지금의 관점에서 본다면 평범하다고 생각할 수 있지만 당시에는 상당히 앞서가는 것이었다. 게다가 그는 뛰어난 음악적 감각을 가진 프로듀서였다. 신중현의 편곡 기법이나 화성을 사용하는 방식은 미국의 것을 가져왔으나 선율 자체는 우리의 색깔을 지니고 있다. 그의 음악은 그 당시 뿐만 아니라 시대를 뛰어넘어 후배 음악가들에 의해 계속 연주되고 있다는 점에서 높이 평가 받아야 마땅하다. 신중현이 지금의 후배들로부터 다시 재조명 받는 이유는 그가 기타 연주의 선구자이기도 하지만 작곡 및 프로듀서로서 자신의 철학을 오롯이 담은 음악을 통해 대중음악에 커다란 흐름을 만들었기 때문이다. 그는 서구의 음악을 한국 사회에 토착화 시켰다. 상업적인 성공을 거두었지만 이에 안주하지 않고 당시 영향 받았던 음악을 한국적인 색채로 표현하기 위해 많은 노력을 했다. 신중현의 음악은 지금 이 시대의 우리 음악을 만들게 한 원동력이었음을 부인할 수 없다. 미래가 불투명한 지금이야말로 신중현의 음악을 비롯하여 우리의 선배 음악인이 지나온 과거를 되돌아보는 작업을 통해 그동안 잊고 지냈던 소중한 가치들을 다시금 찾아보아야 할 때이다. Popular music study in Korea has been considered to be rather indelicate in its academic value which has lead to a demise of research and growth. Unlike classical music, all areas of pop music study(history, theory, and performance) in Korea inevitably rely on curriculums and courses from foreign countries. Since I have been active in the industry for quite some time, it came to my mind to share about how the root of band music has formed in Korea. Most importantly, I focused on the era of Eighth U.S. Army when the modern band music in Korea first arose to discuss the important role Shin Joong Hyun’s Psychedelic music style played. Although it only covers a limited portion of our pop music history, my purpose here is to provide musicians of next generations with knowledge on the root of our pop music culture. Chapter one covers topics on Hippie, Psychedelic, and LSD which I referenced from ‘The Formation of Korea Rock Music and its Resurrection by Shin, Joong-Hyun’, Master’s Theses by Shin, Soo-Nam, Rock music, and cultural and social history of America. Chapter two is about Shin Joong Hyun which I referenced from two of Shin Joong Hyun’s autobiographies and interviews. For chapter three ‘The Song Analysis’, I analyzed lyrics, arrangements, and sounds from 12 of Shin Joong Hyun’s tracks with the most Psychedelic characteristics during his prime. It contains scores based on actual copies. Shin Joong Hyun first made his debut as a guitarist at ‘The Eighth U.S. Army Show’ in 1955. His playing style was exceptionally unique and by far ahead of his time. In addition to being a phenomenal guitarist, he was a talented producer. Shin Joong Hyun’s new approach to arranging and harmonizing carried qualities of Western music but kept the melody lines of our own traditional style. Shin Joong Hyun’s music is still being played by today’s musicians after decades later and it definitely deserves to be praised for generations to come. Shin Joong Hyun showed philosophical qualities through his music making it possible for him to be called “the legend” even by today’s musicians. He genuinely brought the Western music to Korea in such an original form. Despite his huge success, Shin Joong Hyun never ceased to express his influence from the Western music in the most Korean way. No one can doubt the fact that his music serves as the backbone of Korea’s pop music today. Our music industry is heading towards a vague future. Now is the time to look back on the history our great musicians such as Shin Joong Hyun and deeply remind us on true values of good music.
