        This study was to evaluate the physical state of the patients discharged from a university hospital for the identification of their demand and recognition of home health care. This study was conducted between December 2, 2002 to December 29, 2002 and the subjects were 300 patients discharged from a university hospital. The data were collected through interviews and evaluation of the physical state. The physical state evaluation tool developed by the Home Health Care Demonstration Project Center of Yonsei Medical Center (1997) and the home health care recognition tool developed by Choi.(2001) were used with some modification and supplementation. The data were analyzed by using SPSS 10.0 WIN Program that included number, percentage, average, standard deviation and Cronbach's α. The results were as follows : 1. In evaluating the physical state of the subjects, 60.3% demanded home health care, demonstrating a relatively high rate. 2. In evaluating the physical state of the subjects who demanded home health care, those who got 13 scores accounted for 62.3% in evaluating demands by physical state areas, nutrition accounted for 51.4% sense and exercise 27.1%, vitality symptom 25.4% and skin 21.6%. 3. In evaluating the disease-related characteristics of the subjects who demanded home health care, cancer accounted for 24.0% 4. In evaluating the recognition of home health care of the subjects, 87.7% responded that they have never heard of home health care and 97.0% did not aware of the procedures needed for receiving home health care. 84.3% said that they would receive home health care if it was made avaliable. 53.7% who wanted to receive home health care said because they could get emotional rest. But 15.7% said that they wouldn't it receive home health care. 40.4% who didn't want to receive home health care said because the nurse's visit to their home could be troublesome.
