우리나라의 문화기반시설인 도서관, 박물관 ․ 미술관, 문화의집, 문예회관 등은 문화발전 및 평생교육에 이바지하는 시설로 시대적 ․ 사회적 요구에 따라 각 시설 고유의 역할이나 사회적 기능이 다양화, 다변화되어 복합문화서비스 공간이자 사회교육기관으로서의 역할을 수행하고 있다. 특히 미술관 내의 도서관이나 자료실은 미술전문도서관의 기능을 수행하고 있어, 선진국에 비해 도서관 수가 크게 부족한 국내 현황을 고려할 때 이러한 미술관의 기능 확대는 매우 고무적인 현상이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 실제 국내 미술관 자료실들은 규모 및 공공서비스 측면에서 많은 문제점을 안고 있으며 관련 학계의 연구 또한 미진한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 문화예술전문도서관이자 미술자료아카이브로서의 미술관 자료실의 중요성을 제고하고, 한국미술문화발전에 기여하는 사회교육기관으로서의 역할을 수행하기 위한 발전방안과 이에 대한 기초 연구 자료를 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 우선 국내외의 미술관 자료실 운영 현황을 파악하기 위해, 국외 미술관으로는 미국, 영국, 프랑스, 일본의 국립미술관을 대상으로 문헌과 인터넷 사이트를 조사한 후 해당 미술관 및 미술관 자료실의 개관과 자료실의 소장자료 현황, 기타 자료관리 시설 등을 정리하였다. 국내 미술관 자료실 현황 조사 대상으로는 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 삼성미술관, 아트센터 나비 등 4개관을 선정하여 문헌연구와 심층면담을 실시하여 자료실 운영 실태를 파악하였다. 이를 바탕으로 미술관 및 미술관 자료실의 개관, 자료실의 일반 현황, 소장자료 현황, 자료관리 현황 등으로 나누어 정리하고 현황을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 물리적 ․ 인적 ․ 정책적 측면, 자료관리, 이용자서비스, 교류협력 등에서 문제점을 도출하고 각각의 개선 모델을 제시하였다. 특히 문헌정보학적 측면과 직접적으로 관련된 자료관리 측면에 있어서는 자료수집, 분류 및 목록, 보존에 관한 효율적인 방안을 제시하였고, 교류협력 측면에서는 국외 협력 사례를 소개하며 미술관 ․ 박물관 자료실, 예술자료관, 국립도서관 및 대학도서관의 예술자료실, 아카이브 등의 유관 기관 간 네트워크를 구축을 통한 교류협력 방안을 제시하였다. 위에 제시한 효율적인 미술 자료관리 방안 및 관련 기관 간 교류협력 방안 이외에도, 매체별로 세분화된 미술자료 관리와 전문적인 정보서비스 제공, 미술자료 관리자들의 결속과 개인의 능력 개발을 통한 사명감과 자긍심 제고, 미술관 자료실 ․ 도서관 ․ 아카이브로서의 역할과 중요성에 대한 인식의 변화와 정책적, 재정적 지원 등이 선행되어야 할 것이다. 또한 자료실이 없는 여러 국내 미술관들도 자료실을 설치하고 대중에게 개방하여 더 많은 사람들과 지식을 공유할 때에 비로소 한국미술에 기여하는 복합문화서비스 공간이자 사회교육기관으로 자리매김할 수 있을 것이다. Libraries, museums, art museums, cultural centers and culture & art centers serve as the infrastructure for our nation's culture which contributes to the cultural development and continuing education. As their unique roles and social functions are diversified, based on the needs of the times and society, they become a place for providing composite cultural services and social education. Especially, as the libraries and resource rooms in art museums play an important role as a special art library, such expansion in the function of the art museums is considered an encouraging phenomenon, given the insufficient number of libraries in Korea compared with advanced nations. Nonetheless, the resource rooms in domestic art museums still exhibit have many problems in terms of size and public service. Further, the research in the related academic society is substantially lacking. In this regard, this study attempts to enhance the importance of art museum libraries as special research library of culture and arts as well as archives of art materials, and suggests the ways to improve their roles as social education institutions contributing to the development of arts and culture and provides the materials for further related research. First to comprehend the present state of the management of overseas art museum libraries, the study conducted literature review and Internet site search for the national art museums of the U.S., Great Britain, France and Japan, and summarized and analyzed the outline of the relevant art museums and its libraries, status of library holdings and materials management of other facilities. To explore present conditions of domestic art museum libraries, this study selected four museums: National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Samsung Museum of Art and Art Center NABi, and performed literature review and in-depth interviews. Then, the findings were analyzed in the areas of the outline of the art museums and their libraries, general status of art museum libraries, status of collections and the status of materials management. As a result, this study identified the problems in physical, human and policy aspect, materials management, user services and exchanges and cooperation and suggested an improvement model for each problem. Especially, in the area of materials management directly related to the library and information science, suggestions were made on effective ways of acquisition, classification, cataloging and preservation. In terms of exchanges and cooperation, the ways to collaborate through the establishment of networks among related institutions including libraries in museum and art museum, art resource center, archives and art collection room at university libraries and the national library were proposed, along with the cases of international cooperation. In addition, the study presented as prerequisites to become a true place for composite cultural services and social education contributing to art and culture, the detailed management of art materials per media, provision of special information services, enhancement of mission and self-pride through the bonds of art materials managers and development of personal abilities, change in the recognition of the role and importance of art museum libraries, libraries and archives, and the support in policy and finance. Further, the need for extensive knowledge sharing was identified for many domestic art museums without such libraries by developing libraries and resource rooms and opening them to the public.
