Since the liberation from the Japanese colonial rule in 1945, Korean painting tradition has been largely influenced from the color painting style during the colonial era and the Chinese water color painting flourished in the late Chosun dynasty. In the 1970's, "new Korean painting" was called for. As the western and eastern methods of color painting were largely introduced, new attempts and experiments were made by more and more young artists in the Korean painting society. Considering that art is the product reflecting 'Zeitgeist', the traditional Chinese water color painting style or the vintage ways of color painting have limits to express contemporary sense of beauty. From the recognition of such limits the Korean artists explore new experiments to express contemporary human life. In the new experiments various changes of materials and methods were needed. This paper mainly studies the effective ways to explore contemporary color painting, and it also deals with the historical changes of painting methods during Koryo and Chosun dynasties.
