        ABSTRACT Hyeon Ju Ma lifelong Education Graduate School of Education Jeonbuk National University A Study on the Perception of After School Instructors' Job Importance and Difficulty The purpose of this research is to investigate the after school instructors' general perception of the importance and difficulty on their duties. The study problems are listed to accomplish this purpose as follows. First, how do the after school instructors recognize the importance and difficulty on their job competence? Second, how do the after school instructors recognize their duties based on their background characteristics (gender, age, experience, education level, and field)? Third, how different is it between the importance and difficulty on their job competence in a sense of perception? The theoretical backgrounds for this study are the concept of after-school, the transition process of after school, the management characteristics of after school and its instructors, the after school instructors' qualification and employment, the after school instructors' training and assessment, the role and duty of after school instructors, and the necessity of survey for the actual job condition. This study surveyed 350 after school instructors working for 25 elementary schools in Jeonju. 303 out of 350 questionnaires were returned and SPSS19.0 was used to analyze the data. The Difference-Test was adopted to see how the instructors' unique personalities could affect the actual job condition. For the sake of more accurate analysis, t-test and one-way ANOVA were utilized as well. The degree of satisfaction was changed into the degree of difficulty based on IPA(Importance-Performance Analysis) to find out how much the instructors are aware of the importance and difficulty of the actual job condition. The results are as follows; First, after school instructors' perception for the job importance turns out as high as an average 3.88%. It was found that the reasons of the job importance are related with student guidance, followed by class guidance, school management support, organization and operation of the school curriculum, and training participation in order. The degree of instructors' job difficulty shows an average 2.92% which rate is a little lower than expected. The reasons for the job difficulty are related with organization and operation of the school curriculum, followed by support of school management, student guidance, training participation, class guidance in order. Second, in terms of the after-school instructors’ background characteristics, it was revealed that female instructors have higher rates than those of male instructors concerning the perception of the job importance. And there is no difference between the sexes in terms of the job difficulty. The shorter the working period of the instructors in the same field, the more aware the instructors are of the importance of their job competence yet the less difficult they feel their job competence. Those instructors in charge of the main (the school-related) subjects find training participation more important than those in charge of rather minor(the specialty and aptitude-related) subjects in a sense of job requirements. Third, in terms of the difference of perception between the job importance and job difficulty of after school instructors, the survey results show that the after school instructors recognize the job importance much better with a little lower awareness of job difficulty. Also, the instructors consider the student guidance and class guidance "Very Important" whereas they consider the school management support and the organization and operation of the school curriculum "Important". And they feel "Average" in a sense of difficulty on the student guidance and school management support while they feel "Below Average" in a sense of difficulty on the class guidance and organization and operation of the school curriculum.
